Midnight In The Mangroves is a non-profit exhibition that brings together photography and shared knowledge about mangrove ecosystems. Through environmental and climate-related themes, the exhibition explores how art can serve as a gentle educational tool within the community. The works reflect Chiron Duong’s imagined spiritual landscapes, inspired by indigenous stories and local narratives.
Exhibition objectives:
To share essential knowledge about mangroves through photography, using a fresh and accessible approach.
To raise funds for mangrove conservation and restoration, while connecting with organizations dedicated to mangrove planting and protection.
The exhibition’s visual system was developed from the geography of mangrove forests—water, shallow areas, and the interwoven roots of trees. Drawing on the theme of mystery, the design references the eyes of unseen creatures hidden behind the trees, inspired by Chiron Duong’s works. These elements come together to form a graphic system defined by the quiet, enigmatic colors of the mangroves.
Physical and spiritual elements intertwine within the mangrove forest. Drawing from this inspiration, the visual identity seeks to capture the quiet wonder of mangroves at night, revealed through the glowing eyes of creatures hidden in the darkness.
Based on mangrove studies & researches, we decided to design a typeface for this project. The main inspiration of the typeface is from the characteristic branches and roots of the mangrove forest and the close eyes of the specific creatures in the forest from underwater to terrestrial.
The typographic system is laid out in combination with the blinking luminous eye visuals, deliberately creating a jungle-like atmosphere.
